Love Tacos? United Way of Whatcom County has the perfect opportunity for you to try tasty tacos while making a difference.
This month, United Way of Whatcom County is hosting their first ever Tastiest Taco Competition. Between September 25 and October 16, participants will have the opportunity to explore our community, one tasty taco at a time!
How it Works
Starting this week, United Way of Whatcom County will begin selling Ticket to Taco booklets for $25. Each booklet will contain the names and addresses of 10 local businesses that are partnering with United Way for this 3 week-long event. Booklets can be purchased online or in person. There are 250 booklets available.
Between September 25 and October 16, taco tasters can take their booklets to participating locations and present them in exchange for one free taco (United Way encourages participants to support local cuisine and buy more!). These tacos are the best of the best, hand selected by management to represent each business’s unique style and flavor profile. Each business has chosen one specific taco to present for this event. No substitutions (7 locations are presenting a vegetarian alternative, indicated with a V below).
Participating vendors include:
Once participating community members have visited each location, they’ll be encouraged to vote for their favorite taco!
The week of October 16, United Way staff will tally the votes and announce the winner of the Tastiest Taco Contest!
Not only will participants be getting great deals on tacos from 10 local businesses, they’ll be helping to change lives throughout our community. United Way of Whatcom County unites a collaborative network of 25 local nonprofits to tackle our community’s most pressing issues, with over 50,000+ lives being impacted by United Way funded services every year. Your participation in this event will help our friends and neighbors who are struggling access the tools and resources they need to achieve financial stability.

This year, we're excited to announce our first-ever 21-Day Equity Challenge!
In presenting this challenge, we follow in the footsteps of other United Ways and organizations in creating space to learn more about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) with the hope of gaining a deeper understanding of how past and present injustices impact people's ability to find stability and flourish. With financial stability at the core of what we do, we believe this information is critical to helping those who are struggling in our community thrive. As we embark on this journey, we invite you to join us as we explore these issues and look to a more equitable future.
How it works:
Beginning June 1, 2023, we'll be sending out one email daily for 21 days. These emails will cover a variety of issues and will include a small library of resources to dive deeper into each topic. This challenge is completely self-paced; you choose which days to engage with and at what level you want to learn.
We aren't the experts, but we know that all these issues directly and indirectly affect a person's ability to build a healthy and stable life. By presenting this information, we acknowledge that struggle isn’t evenly distributed and that certain communities, groups, and individuals are more prone to adversity for reasons far outside their control.
