United Way 101: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

Nov 7, 2025

“You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children.” – Dolly Parton

Did you know that just having books in a home can factor into a child’s future academic and career success?

It’s true! Children who grow up in literacy-rich homes are exposed to more words, develop deeper relationships with caregivers, and better prepared for kindergarten.

Early learning and literacy are key to helping set children up for success in school and life. United Way is committed to giving our community’s kids the best start possible, which is why they brought Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to Whatcom County in 2022. This low-barrier literacy program mails one book every month to registered children from birth to age 5 at no cost to families. United Way of Whatcom County pays for this program for our community’s kids, so our littlest learners have access to high quality books regardless of their family’s income.

Since bringing this program to our community in 2022:

  • Over 7,500 kiddos have received books
  • Over 4,500 local kids currently receive books each month
  • Over 160,000 books have been mailed to Whatcom County kids

Talk about impact! And it’s all thanks to the generosity of people like you. Want to support the Imagination Library and 20+ other AMAZING programs helping kids and families in our community? Click HERE to give.
