United Way 101: Making Tough Choices

Oct 24, 2025

Limited resources = tough choices

Every day, folks in our community are faced with tough questions, like:

  • I don’t have the support or guidance I need and am drowning in school. Will I graduate? What does my future look like?
  • Should I pay the light bill and go without medication or pay for this prescription to be filled and go without power?
  • Should I leave my young child home alone while they are sick or take off work this week to care for them? If I do, how am I supposed to pay rent? I’m already a month late.
  • Is being homeless better than staying in this unsafe situation?
  • Where can I shower for my job interview?
  • Will I eat today?

Some of these questions have easier answers than others, but all of them are important. That’s why United Way of Whatcom County supports a powerful network of nonprofits providing everything from academic support programs to affordable and safe housing, abuse prevention, free showers and medical care, and free food (plus so much more!). Because whether you’re a student looking for support, a single parent needing assistance, or someone experiencing homelessness and needing access to basic services before you can even think about next steps, United Way strives to ensure that the tools and resources to achieve stability are available for every person.

Support Hope Locally!

When you give to United Way, you’re not just supporting services, you’re providing hope, dignity, and a path forward to people you may see every day who have limited resources and are out of options.

Watch this video for an example of how one local woman used United Way funded resources to get back on her feet! Or this one to hear about how a local student used United Way funded services to achieve a dream!
