Health

The United Way of Whatcom County believes the three basic building blocks that provide the foundation for a good quality of life are: Education , Income , and Health. Whether it is an individual without health insurance, a victim of abuse, or an individual struggling with a mental illness or addiction, when an individual suffers a health crisis the effects ripple throughout the rest of the community.  In order to improve the health of the community, United Way of Whatcom County is working to:

  • Increase access to critical healthcare services
  • Reduce substance abuse, domestic violence and child abuse
  • Increase health education and preventative care

Why support Health?

In Whatcom County, 14% of all individuals ages 18 and older reported having medical needs but could not see a doctor due to the high cost of medical care. Additionally, the rate of illicit drug use remains to be high with 6.5% of Whatcom County citizens using illicit drugs. As of 2007, 25% of Whatcom County citizens ages 18 and older suffer from obesity.
